Pencil Drawings of Werewolf

Drawing a Werewolf

One of my favorite fantasy creatures are werewolves, so I thought I’d do some pencil drawings of a werewolf…or at least make an attempt at it. I’ve never tried drawing one before and it took a couple tries to get what I was aiming for…

Werewolves have been portrayed for ages by artists in a variety of sizes and shapes. Some look like a man basically with an overgrown hairdo and beard such as in the movie Teen Wolf….along with hairier arms than most guys, while others look like a big wolf to me as in the Twilight movies. Finally, you have the most intriguing interpretation of what a werewolf should look like…

at least to me anyway…

These somewhat scary, but also strangely beautiful and powerful creatures are the type I’ve noticed in movies such as Underworld…

The thing I like the most about these type of werewolves is that this is such a creative way to portray them…and unique to their kind. Not, as a extra hairy man or as a huge wolf, but an interesting mix of the two.

A creature that can stand up on two legs when it wants, but can run on all fours too…plus, it has hands like a man so it can still do things like open doors, pick things up, or even hold a weapon.

Sure they’re kinda hairy and maybe even a little scary, but their ability to shapeshift from man (or woman) to a powerful wolf like creature is probably something everyone that has heard of the werewolf has thought about at some time…wouldn’t it be cool?

Anyhow, the first attempt it turned out like this….

First Werewolf Drawing

Well, I didn’t like it. I wasn’t happy with it at all…but, then again I was in a hurry when doing this and didn’t take a lot of time at it either.

So, I realized I can do much better. Well, I had to try anyways…

And below is the second attempt…

Second Werewolf Drawing – Sketch/rough draft

This is the second attempt or rough draft and the beginning of shading on my second werewolf…

And with a lot more time spent, I used regular drawing pencils starting out lightly with the HB and going up in darkness to I believe 6B if I remember correctly…but, since I wanted it yet darker in the shadowed areas especially I did go over some areas with charcoal too…medium soft and extra soft to get it quite black in some areas.

Finally! A werewolf I was happy to call my own, lol…

It was a lot of fun, although it took quite a fair amount of time and a lot of nitpicking…as I always do if i don’t think one little detail doesn’t look the way I want it.

All I can say is I love the kneaded eraser…I couldn’t have done it without it…it can really bring out the detail!

That’s all I got for now…but, I’ll be doing more werewolves again since it was a lot of fun and I think they’re pretty cool to draw.

What do you think? Would you like to draw a werewolf? And if so, what type would you draw?

….more of a man-type, or a wolf, or one  similar to this?

I hope you enjoyed your visit here and if you have any questions about anything please feel free to ask in the comments below. I’d love to hear from you!
